You may have heard about fulvic acid, but what is it precisely, and does it live up to the hype?
Fulvic acid is found in soil, in certain mineral deposits, and in minute quantities in organic fruits and vegetable. It’s also found naturally in streams and lakes, and small amounts have even been detected in the human body.
To understand what fulvic acid is, we need to first understand something about the structure and makeup of the organic part of soil, or humus. Most of us have never really thought about what soil is made of, but this life-giving substance has a complex and varied composition.
Soil contains both organic and inorganic components, and the organic portion constitutes humus. This rich, dark part of the soil comprises a mix of plant, animal and microorganism cells and tissues, at various stages of decomposition. Being rich in nutrients, humus is responsible for giving soil its characteristic density, moisture, and ability to nourish plant life.
Humus is also rich in humic substances, which are small organic molecules, and fulvic acid is one of the most important humic substances. A soil’s profile comes down to its unique composition of different humic acids, fulvic acids, microbes, decaying material, water, and minerals. Soil found in fertile, biodiverse forests is rich in fulvic acid, for example, while grassland soil contains a higher proportion of other humic acids.
Microbes create tiny amounts of fulvic acid as a side effect of biochemical reactions during the aerobic decomposition of organic materials. Because fulvic acid molecules are so complex and varied in nature, they’ve proven impossible to synthesize artificially in a laboratory.
And though fulvic acid has been found in natural mineral deposits in certain places around the world, the challenge is how to ensure that it’s properly purified and isolated from the dozens of other compounds present in mineral deposits that have formed over millennia.
Is shilajit the same as fulvic acid?

Shilajit has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Indian Ayurveda for thousands of years, and is known by many names. The consensus is clear, though: shilajit is an incredible all-in-one health tonic and rejuvenator, purported to extend life and strengthen the body against an array of health conditions, including diabetes, heart conditions, infertility and digestive complaints.
Though many people find success supplementing with shilajit, it typically only contains a small percentage of the most active ingredient, fulvic acid – usually no more than 20% but often as low as a fraction of a percent.
Is fulvic acid good for you?
Research into the health benefits of shilajit has been challenging, since no two samples will have the same composition, and the quality of shilajit is influenced heavily by its source, and the manner in which it’s extracted and purified. Unfortunately, some shilajit can contain harmful amounts of fungi, heavy metals and other contaminants that counteract its substantial health benefits.
This probably explains why shilajit research often yields such mixed findings.
