Shilajit vs. AEON: What’s the Difference Anyway?

We’re always talking about the power of fulvic and humic acid on this blog, as well as how much we love shilajit. Though we’ve alluded to the differences between AEON and shilajit a few times before, we’d like to spend some time exploring this issue in a little more depth.

Shilajit (pronounced “shee-lah-jeet”) is similar to AEON in that both of them contain fulvic and humic acid. Because of this, they both can claim therapeutic advantages and can be used to treat a range of health conditions. But this is just about the only way in which they’re similar.

Shilajit

Very simply, shilajit is a thick, tar-like material that naturally occurs in special geographical deposits around the world. Traditionally, shilajit was extracted from deposit sites in the Himalayan mountains in India and Nepal.

This dense, viscous material is usually available in solid rock or ball form, but this makes it difficult to determine exact dosages. Because shilajit is harvested seasonally, the composition of each batch varies wildly. This is not dissimilar from the “terroir” of wine – i.e. the regional terrain, climate and soil quality greatly impact the flavor of each particular vintage.

Shilajit closely resembles tar and in fact it forms in a similar way to the petroleum deposits that are tapped to extract gasoline. Petroleum tar and shilajit are both created by millions and millions of years of organic matter decomposition and the accumulated effect of eons of geological processes.

The difference is that although petroleum tar is extremely toxic, shilajit demonstrates incredible medicinal, therapeutic ad nutritional capabilities. Their origins are similar, but the final product could not be more different. This is why the practitioners of the ancient healing modalities of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have prized shilajit for centuries.

Shilajit’s powers have even begun to attract the attention of the scientific community, and its pharmacological, nutritional and neurological properties are now being more thoroughly investigated. So impressive are shilajit’s effects on the human body that many researchers unreservedly call it a panacea.

Natural shilajit is bursting with nutrients, in particular fulvic and humic acid. We’ve written a number of blog posts on these remarkable organic acids, which form after millions of years of plant matter decomposition, and are more or less the reason why shilajit is so effective. Fulvic and humic acid are the secret behind shilajit’s magic – and their exact therapeutic mechanisms are a favorite area of scientific interest.

Unfortunately, shilajit is not perfect. In fact, the material has actually been banned in Canada because it contains high levels of toxic heavy metals and other hazardous trace materials such as mycotoxins. This is not to mention the pungent, unpleasant smell and taste that shilajit is notorious for.

Fulvic and humic acid work synergistically. Fulvic acid transforms key inorganic trace minerals into organic materials that can then be more easily absorbed into the body. Humic acid plays a role in detoxifying the body via a process called chelation. They mutually enhance one another’s function: fulvic acid encourages the transport and absorption of essential nutrients and minerals, while humic acid encourages the elimination of toxins and waste products. Humic acid does this by chelating toxic substances (like heavy metals and toxic plastics like BPA) so they can then be flushed out of your body.

These are just some of the ways that fulvic and humic acid work – but there are a number of other interesting mechanisms currently being studied in more detail. Though scientists are learning more every day, they do know that both acids promise impressive benefits for human health:

  • To combat free radical damage
  • To correct anemia and overall iron deficiencies
  • To enhance gut wellbeing and digestive resilience
  • To support and strengthen the immune system
  • To counter the effects of aging
  • To assist the body’s natural detoxification processes
  • To improve the condition of hair, skin and nails
  • To reduce neural plaque and combat neurodegenerative processes
  • And much more

We’ve covered these benefits and more on our blog – take a look.

AEON

AEON is 100% pure extract of humic and fulvic acid. Our fulvic acid doesn’t come from foreign shilajit, however, but an extremely high-quality Canadian deposit located in Alberta, Canada. This organic deposit is particularly nutrient rich and contains both fulvic and humic acid at high concentrations. It’s also relatively low in heavy metals and toxins so commonly found in shilajit.

At AEON, we employ a unique, patented process that completely removes any impurities, heavy metals and mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are products created by certain mold and fungi species that were responsible for the initial organic matter decomposition millions of years ago.

Though shilajit is truly a potent “super supplement,” it doesn’t come without risks – and heavy metals and mycotoxins are prime examples. AEON, however, does away with impurities and contains only 100% purified humic and fulvic acid.

What’s more, AEON has benefits shilajit doesn’t: it’s water soluble and therefore much easier to get accurate dosing. It’s also great-tasting (pure fulvic acid has zero taste in its raw form) and convenient. Simply mix in with any beverage and drink.

The Future of AEON

Scientists are working hard to understand the more mysterious mechanisms behind fulvic and humic acid’s therapeutic power. It’s no exaggeration to say that it’s a race to figure out exactly what makes fulvic acid work – so the power can be harnessed. We are only just scratching the surface when it comes to understanding the full potential of this impressive substance.

AEON is an evidence-based company, which is why we’re always trying to make sense of the ongoing scientific research out there and share it with you, so you can make the best decisions for your own health.

If there is any specific product you’d like to see fulvic acid in, leave us a note on Facebook or Instagram (@true.aeon) and let us know!
